Roll Over NinjaTrader Futures Contracts in Your Hosted Workspace

Roll futures contracts in your NMT NinjaTrader workspace. Choose batch or single-window updates, check strategy and copier mappings, then save the verified layout.

NinjaTrader desktop workspace with charts and SuperDOM order tools

Roll your NinjaTrader charts to the confirmed next contract inside your Ninja Mobile Trader VPS, using either a single window’s instrument selector or the batch rollover tool. Then check strategies and copier mappings separately. We specialize in hosting NinjaTrader Desktop on Windows, keeping those tools together in one workspace you can reach from supported devices.

The benefit for our customers is one hosted setup to maintain: make the contract changes there, save the verified layout, and return to that same Windows installation from your next device.

Confirm the contract before changing the workspace#

Record the full current symbol and expiry, the intended replacement, and the affected charts, strategies and copier mappings. Use your provider’s current contract instructions and deadlines. Different futures products follow different calendars; a date shown in an old tutorial is not a universal rollover date.

NinjaTrader’s rollover and expiration overview identifies its dashboard calendar as a source for upcoming dates. It also distinguishes changing the chart from managing an open position: switching the displayed contract does not move that position.

Plan a maintenance window with automated order generation stopped and existing orders and positions accounted for. Keep automatic restart tools paused while changing execution settings. If you need an archive first, use our NinjaTrader backup guide.

Choose a single-window or batch change#

Change only selected windows#

Use the manual method when some windows should retain the old expiry. In each intended window, enter the full replacement symbol and expiry in its instrument selector, then press Enter. Check the resulting selection before moving to the next window.

NinjaTrader’s manual rollover documentation covers this narrower approach. Keep a simple before-and-after list so a chart left on the previous contract is an intentional choice.

Update eligible instruments across open workspaces#

Follow NinjaTrader’s Desktop batch rollover instructions:

  1. In the Control Center, open Tools > Database Management.
  2. Inspect the rollover section. Eligibility depends on the configured date for the next contract.
  3. Review each proposed expiry. Clear Update for instruments you want to leave alone.
  4. Select Rollover, then inspect the affected windows.

The scope includes instrument lists and windows in all open workspaces, including one that is not currently displayed. A closed workspace is outside that open-workspace scope. If your replacement contract is not yet offered, verify its symbol and timing before choosing a manual change; do not edit database dates just to force eligibility.

Check execution settings separately#

NinjaScript strategies do not roll forward with the batch operation. Update them manually according to the strategy’s instructions. NinjaTrader’s Strategies tab guide explains that editing requires a disabled strategy.

Use this rollover-specific check before resuming:

Component What to verify
Each strategy instance Intended contract, account, input series and startup settings
Copier leader and followers Intended symbol/expiry mapping and destination accounts in the actual copier
Account records Existing positions and working orders, including anything remaining on the old contract

A chart title showing the new expiry is not confirmation that these other components changed. Follow the copier vendor’s procedure rather than assuming the platform’s batch tool controls it. Our copier hosting guide explains where those dependencies run.

Rehearse the changed configuration in supported simulation with live routing excluded. Check the resulting instrument and account records. Use the strategy continuity guide for the separate startup and synchronization checks before restoring live automation.

Review drawings, then save the result#

Roll the existing chart rather than closing it and creating another if you want to retain manually placed drawing objects. Those drawings keep their price levels; strategy-generated drawings are redrawn based on the bars after rollover.

Historical bars can change with the selected merge policy. Back adjustment offsets earlier prices, so a saved line may no longer line up with the same historical bar. Inspect the result; do not change the merge policy simply to make an old drawing look right.

After validation, save each workspace you intend to retain through Workspaces > workspace name > save. Our workspace and chart-template guide covers that layout task. Recheck any previously closed workspace when you next open it.
