Create a local ATM template by selecting Custom in NinjaTrader’s ATM Strategy selector, then choosing Save as Template inside your Ninja Mobile Trader VPS. We specialize in hosting NinjaTrader Desktop on Windows, keeping your installation, local templates and supported add-ons together when you connect from a PC, Mac, phone or tablet.
That gives our customers one Desktop setup to maintain: configure it on a larger screen, then return to the same hosted installation from another supported device.
Know what you are saving#
NinjaTrader’s Advanced Trade Management overview describes ATM strategies as semi-automated position management. A template stores reusable settings; an active ATM manages orders associated with an actual entry.
A NinjaScript automated strategy is a separate programmable system. Creating an ATM template does not create that system or run a historical test. Our Strategy Analyzer guide covers historical NinjaScript testing.
Choose the local Desktop workflow#
This procedure covers local ATMs. NinjaTrader also documents server-side ATMs for its NinjaTrader connection; those templates are stored on its servers. NMT’s role here is hosting your Windows installation and local workflow.
Check the platform’s local versus server-side ATM guide for your version and connection. The documented mode control is under Tools > Options > Strategies > ATM Strategies; Multi-provider mode disables server-side ATMs. Do not switch modes with ATM orders working. Resolve them through your normal order-management procedure before changing the setting.
Create a named local template#
Work in a supported simulation setup with live order routing and copier routes excluded. Start without an active position or working orders in that practice account.
- Open an order-entry interface such as Chart Trader or SuperDOM inside the VPS. Confirm the simulation account and intended instrument/contract.
- Select Custom in the ATM Strategy selector.
- Review the Order quantity, TIF (time in force), Parameter type, target quantities, stop-loss/profit values and any Stop Strategy settings. Use your intended configuration; this guide does not prescribe trade sizes or stop distances.
- Choose Save as Template, enter a descriptive name and save.
- Recall that name from the selector and confirm the settings reload as intended.
The parameter reference explains the units. For example, Ticks expresses distance from the average entry, while Price specifies an absolute price. A number without its parameter type is not a complete setting.
Local templates include quantity and TIF. Recheck them when reusing a template on another instrument. A name such as Local-Practice can identify your test configuration; it is a naming example, not a template supplied by NMT.
NinjaTrader’s template management guide also explains renaming and removing saved templates.
Check the selector before a practice entry#
The ATM selection-mode guide distinguishes these choices:
| Selector shows | What the submitted entry uses |
|---|---|
| None | No ATM is started or attached by that selection |
| Custom or a saved template name | The chosen settings initiate an ATM when the entry fills or partially fills |
| An active ATM, marked with a lightning-bolt icon | A subsequent fill applies to that existing ATM |
The order-entry window’s ATM Strategy selection mode can automatically select the active ATM after submission or keep the template selected. Inspect that property and the selector itself before a subsequent entry; a familiar template name alone does not establish the behavior.
In simulation, confirm the resulting stops, targets and account records match the configuration you intended.
Keep the verified setup on your NMT desktop#
Local templates stay in the Windows installation where you saved them. Reconnect to the same NMT VPS and Windows user to use that installation from another device. Remote viewing does not transfer those local templates into NinjaTrader’s separate native mobile app.
Include Templates when creating a suitable NinjaTrader backup archive. Save the surrounding window arrangement separately using our workspace and chart-template guide. For application restarts and automation dependencies, use the strategy continuity guide.
